Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is one of a group of treatments involving surgical implantation of a medical device called a brain pacemaker, which sends electrical impulses to specific parts of the brain. The surgery involves cranionatomy for implantation of an electrode into the subthalamic nucleus or basal ganglia of the brain. The electrode is powered by a battery-operated neurostimulator typically placed under the collar bone. A connecting wire of platinum and iridium, insulated with polyurethane, conducts signals from the neurostimulator, which is hermetically sealed in a titanium housing. The procedure for depression was discovered by Helen Mayberg of the University of Toronto. It has only been performed on seven patients. But the discovery of Area 25 of the brain and its imlications for patients with severe depression could be very promising. Although the procedure is probably many years away from being proven both safe and effective, I would encourage everyone to watch a video of this special segment on Sixty-Minutes. Dr. Helen Mayberg of the University of Toronto, Dr. Andres Lozano of Toronto Western Hospital, and Dr. Sidney Kennedy of Canada’s University Health Network (UHN) in 2005 reported in Neuron that electrical stimulation of a small area of the frontal cortex brought about a “striking and sustained remission” in four out of six patients suffering from clinical depression, whose symptoms had previously been resistant to medication, psychotherapy and electroconvulsive therapy.[1] The researchers reported that, using brain imaging, they noticed that activity in the subgenual cingulate region (SCR or Brodmann area 25) the lowest part of a band of tissue that runs along the midline of the brain seemed to correlate with symptoms of sadness and depression. They implanted electrodes into six patients while they were locally anesthetised, but alert. While the current was switched on, four of the patients reported feeling a black cloud lifting, and became more alert and interested in their environments. The changes reversed when the current was switched off. The effects of continuous SCR stimulation have produced sustained remission from depression in the four patients for six months, the team reported. When reporting the results, the team did caution that the trial was so small that the findings must be considered only provisional. Washington For many students of the Bible who are sincerely struggling to establish some type of clear and relatively stable theological perspective, the concept of God as sovereign God is a very important doctrine that demands serious study. It is not sufficient to simply acknowledge that God is all-knowing, all powerful and omnipresent, but we must have some understanding of the nature and essence of God at a deeper level so that the significance of His sovereignty is known in a meaningful way. From a very early age, I had always been taught that God can do anything but fail. I was told that God is omnipotent, omniscient, omnipresent, loving, just and so on; that nothing happens in life that was in contradiction to His will. And yet, the world was (and is) wrought with the terrible realities of injustice, persecution, and oppression. In my mind, I could not conceive of a God who permitted so much wrong to prevail in the world in which He was ruler. I often thought to myself, Was it Gods will that Blacks should be enslaved and accorded an inferior status in society? Was it Gods will that Hitler and his regime should torture and murder six million Jews? Was it Gods will that thousands of innocent children should be slaughtered or fall victim to crimes of all kinds and treated as objects rather than people? If God is just and in charge, then why are the innocent called upon to die or suffer so needlessly? The book of Isaiah stands out in my mind as having been of tremendous help as I grappled with these and other questions. I read about how Assyria had become a threatening world power and had defeated Judah where Isaiah had lived and prophesied. How God acts in history became clearer to me as I understood the destruction of Gods people by a pagan nation. In the final analysis, Assyria unwittingly became the instrument of Gods purposes. Assyria seemed to be in control, but, in reality, was not. God was and God is. Slowly, I began to comprehend the truth behind my cloud of questions. I began to see that history, past, present and future is indeed in Gods control and that He acts within the freedom of His own economy toward accomplishing His purposes. Therefore, I cannot say that God wills all that happens. But, what I can say is that whatever happens, God is Lord over it. In events where men in their freedom defy God, forces like Nazism, slavery, and communism inevitably develop. Yet, even these forces are brought under Gods sovereignty. God is not defeated by a Hitler or Stalin, nation or country. On the contrary, God is able to make such use of them that in time His purposes rather than mans are affected. My personal perspective no longer takes into account the questions of the human condition as it relates to Gods justice. By James Finch Once the proud center of the Uranium Universe, and until recently the worlds largest uranium producer, the city of Grants (New Mexico) nearly collapsed in the 1980s as uranium prices sank into a twenty-year depression. Five thousand uranium miners lost their jobs, and the city elders panicked, searching for an industry with which to replace mining. Uranium companies helped build our hospital, our school and most of our major infrastructure, Star Gonzales, Cibola Countys Head of Economic Development, told StockInterview.com. We are a mining community and know it is beneficial. Grants is a sleepy town of less than 10,000, north of Interstate 40, off exit 85, and about an hours west of Albuquerque. This past November, we toured the towns Mining Museum, which boasts of having the only underground uranium mining museum. Grants is now a prison town, and instead of mining uranium, the town runs most of the states prison system. The times are changing again, though. Along with the recent $45.50/pound spot uranium price, revival of uranium mining in Grants is all but a done deal. Several uranium companies have taken their first steps into Cibola County. As with the state of Wyoming, more will follow them. IS URANIUM MINING AGAIN WELCOME IN GRANTS? We wondered what the political pulse on uranium mining would be like in Grants. So we talked to several representatives on the city, county and state level. Fasten your seatbelts, and move over Wyoming. We are very mining friendly in this community. Thats an understatement. Grants Mayor Joe Murrietta returned from Vietnam after being wounded on the Fourth of July 1968 with a Purple Heart and began working at Anacondas uranium mill in Grants, New Mexico. He worked for Anaconda and ARCO for fifteen years before the uranium boom in his town ended. We can handle the mining industry, and we are looking forward to having it back, Murrietta told us. The mayor is confident the entire community would welcome uranium miners back. Grants City Manager Bob Horacek worked in a uranium mill, as a college student twenty five years ago, and remembered it was a nice source of income to help him pay tuition. We are obviously looking for jobs, he told us. Its a pro, and economically we could use the higher paying jobs. Asked about one company, which announced it may build a mill, possibly in Cibola County, Horacek quickly responded, Id like to visit with them. State Senator Joseph A Fidel, a Democrat representing District 30, which includes Cibola and Socorro counties, perked up during our interview, when we talked about uranium in his county, I would be happy to have mining come back. It would be very positive economically. We talked about environmental activists. Senator Fidel explained, If there are protests, they will come from outsiders, from Taos or other parts of the country. Ms. Gonzales agreed, There will be no protests from the local community. The mining spirit still lives today in this town. These echoed State Senator Leavells remarks, in part two of this series, Most of the protestors have come from San Francisco, DC and Santa Fe. Fidel concluded, The community will be very supportive of uranium mining. People will be cooperative and will react positively, when the time comes. Each of the politicians interviewed were cautious, but optimistic. Grants, New Mexico was hard hit. As with the Governor of Wyoming, who basically told uranium companies to put up or shut up, New Mexican decision makers are waiting to hear directly from uranium companies. Are they serious? Fidel pointed out, I believe it will materialize into something serious. After all, the county may be sitting on hundreds of millions of pounds of unrecovered uranium. More than 340 million pounds, possibly a great deal more, of uranium was produced before mining came to a standstill during the twenty-year drought. We have a lot of uranium, said Senator Fidel.
