By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Christian_N]Christian N A student loan is a loan that is granted to a college student enrolled in courses full or part time for at least one semester or quarter and who have declared a major with the intent of pursuing a degree of higher education. Student loans can be granted through various lenders with a governmental guarantee, or can be granted from private lenders with no guarantee. Some student loans do not require a parent’s signature, while others do. The government guaranteed student loan is classified by two types, subsidized and unsubsidized. The subsidized student loans have a yearly limit and allow for the government to pay the interest on the loan while the student is in school. The unsubsidized student loan allows for a higher yearly limit, but the student must pay the interest while in school, or the accrued interest will be added onto the balance of the loan and is the responsibility of the student during repayment. A student loan can be deferred while the student is in school half time indefinitely. Private student loans usually have a set period of deferment, 2-5 years, and then the student must begin repayment regardless of whether or not they have completed their education. Currently, student loans have the best interest rates in town. As the interest rate index rises, so will the student loan rate. During low rate times, many scramble to consolidate their student loans. This saves a tremendous amount of interest in the long run, since a student loan repayment plan can extend over 25 years depending on the loan balance. Those students with an extremely low student loan balance ($5,000 or less) usually only have the typical 5 or 10 year repayment option. A student loan is eligible to be used for tuition, books, on campus housing and childcare expenses. Some student loans allow for the purchase of an automobile to get to and from school, or other pertinent school materials such as a computer or to pay off other student loan debt. Many students today are counting on student loans for their education. What they are not realizing when they sign the student loan promissory note is the debt they are incurring for a very long time after their schooling has been completed. The average student loan balance is upwards of $50,000 for a four year degree. Add to that professional education costs, and some students will have over $150,000 in student loan debt. While the investment of an education is always a wise idea because investing in one’s mind will never diminish in value, the costs associated with this investment and the income expected to earn should be carefully evaluated. Some careers do not warrant a high enough salary to repay the loans. Grants and scholarships should always be considered as alternatives to obtaining student loan debt.

By Gene Smith Really cold weather can make you uncomfortable. In some cases, the cold weather can be life threating. Here are some tips that may keep you alive and in some cases comfortable. IF YOU HAVE HEAT Seal off gaps in doors and windows with a rug, towell or cloth. For example, you won’t want to seal the bottom of a door with insulation tape since you will be going in and out of that door! IF YOU HAVE ELECTRIC BASEBOARD HEAT Try to have family member stay in one room where the thermostat is comfortable. Close all doors in the house and have the thermostat set somewhat lower in the rooms that are not occupied. Remember to observe all safety precautions with your heating units since they are being worked hard during a cold spell. IF YOU HAVE A HEAT PUMP, OIL, STEAM, AND GAS HEAT Remember, these units also use electricity. Most provide a safe, comfortable and warm environment. Just a reminder, if the electricity goes off, you won’t have heat. ALTERNATIVE SPOT HEATERS Portable electric space heaters-these should have constant supervision. I recommend not to use one if you are not at home. Read and follow all the safety precautions with these units. Be sure that children do not play around the unit. SOME THINGS TO HAVE IN YOUR HOUSE FOR EMERGENCY That cordless phone you have is real cute! However, when the electric goes off, you won’t be able to use the phone. Go out an buy a cheap landline phone such as one sold at dollar-type stores with a cord just in case your electric goes out, you didn’t recharge you cell phone and you, really, really want to make a phone call. Store this “cheapie” phone away somewhere you can access if you need it. Have flashlight with batteries. You might want to buy several cheap battery lamps for emergency. Keep extra batteries. These are much safer than candles. Have extra blankets available particularly if you can’t get out. They could keep you and your loved ones alive. Put jugs of drinking water in a cooler. Leave the top off of the cooler until you loose all power and heat. Then, put the lid on the cooler. This will allow you to have drinking water that will not freeze up for many hours. Have a good supply of sweaters and shirts. In cold emergency, wear layered clothing-this should keep you warm. DON’T GO IT ALONE Seniors, single-parents and physically impared-If you loose heat or electric-call a friend or a service agency in your community. Let them know your situation. Things could improve or they could get worse. These are just a few tips on cold weather existence. Check out the web for other important recommendations on staying warm and staying alive.

By Knut Holt THE CAUSES OF EXCESSIVE WEIGHT If you eat more nutrients containing energy than you need for your daily activities, for the internal processes of your body, and for the burning process that maintains the body temperature, the excessive nutrients can be transformed to fat and stored in the fat depots in your body. The causes of this occurring, and thus of overweight, are one or more of these factors: 1. Consuming too much fat: Fat is the most energy-rich nutrient, and over-consume will cause the excessive fat consumed to be deposited in the body. 2. Consuming too much sugar, starch or other carbohydrates: Carbohydrates are also important energy sources. Over-consume of carbohydrates will cause the excess to be converted to fat and stored in the body. 3 Consuming too much alcohol: Also this substance contains energy, and excessive consume results in fat stored in your body. 4 Consuming too much of preprocessed products with added, and often hidden fat or sugar, like sweet beverages, cakes, ice-cream, fast food and snacks. 5. Eating too much altogether: Perhaps your food is not fat- or sugar-laden, but you simply eat too much altogether. Also protein will be converted to fat if it is overconsumed. 6. Irregular eating, like eating much at one time, little at another time, wait long between some meals, consuming huge doses of sugar at some times, no sugar at other times: If you eat irregularly, you can get an uncontrollable appetite, a swinging blood sugar level, and an abnormal physiology that makes you deposit fat in your body. 7. A still sitting life with little exercise so that you burn little fat and sugar. 8. Boredom in your daily life: If you do not have much hobbies, or leisure activities, or isolate yourself from other people, you may suffer form boredom, and excessive eating may be your way of getting entertainment. 9. The body has some capacity of burning some extra amount of sugar or fat. This capacity may be decreased because of lack of vitamins and minerals, and because of an unsound diet. 10. An abnormal appetite that urges you to eat far more than you need: This abnormal appetite may originate from psychological causes, an unsound diet or lack of exercise. ANALYZE YOUR OBESITY PROBLEMS Before beginning your weight reduction program, go through all obesity causing factors listed above, to find out what factors contribute to your over-weight problem. Go down to details. For example: If you find you consume too much sugar, find out the exact food types contributing to your excessive sugar consume. Write everything down. MAKE A PLAN With the performed analysis in hand, make a plan for your weigh reduction. Decide a goal for your weight. Decide one or more measures for each component contributing to your problem. Write down your plan. HOW TO REDUCE WEIGHT In order to successfully loose weight, you must attack every component you have found to be a causing factor of your obesity problem. Here are the concrete measures you can use, and put into your plan: 1. Eat less fat If you eat much fat, you must reduce the daily intake of fat, to do so: * Choose fat poor fish, fat poor meat/beef, chicken, turkey, mushrooms and other food sources with law fat content as the main components for dishes. * Cut away visible fat from meat or other food sources. * Do not add much margarine, butter or oil to your food. * When you fry something, try to use as little fatty smear in the pan as possible. 2. Eat less sugar If you eat much sugar, reduce your daily intake of free sugar, or bounded sugar as in flour, potatoes and the like: * Do not add much sugar to your food. * You may also need to consume less bread, potatoes, peas and beans, if you eat very much of it, but do not stop eating these kinds of food, since they contain valuable nutrients. However, use bread made of full corn. 3. Avoid excessive alcohol consume Alcohol contains energy, and will be transformed to fat, if you consume too much of it. 4. Avoid preprocessed food with added and often hidden fat or sugar Some food contains a great amount of hidden fat or sugar, especially fast food, snacks or preprocessed food. * Therefore you should avoid eating much of products like: cakes, sweet drinks, snacks, chocolate, ice-cream or fast-food. * You should also buy all the food you use in a natural form, and make your dishes yourself. Then you achieve an absolute control over the amount of fat and sugar in your dishes. 5. Eat less altogether, but do not starve yourself Having reduced the amount of sugar and fat from your diet, you may fall to the temptation of eating more than before, because the new composition of your food does not satisfy your hunger. You should be aware of, and avoid this trap. * When trying to loose weight, you should reduce the total amount of the food you eat. * However, you should not starve yourself. To starve will only make you tired and sick, and then make you interrupt your efforts to get slim. 6. Eat regularly Regular eating habits will give you a stable blood sugar level, help you control your appetite and normalize your fat burning physiology. * You should eat three or four meals each day. * Each meal should contain the same moderate amount of sugar and fat. * Each meal should contain some protein sources like fish, meat, eggs, mushrooms or protein-rich seeds, and in every means be as nutritionally complete as possible. 7. Increase your daily physical activity Physical activity increases fat burning and will help you control your appetite. * Do some daily exercises of a kind that increases energy consumption: Jogging, cycling, swimming, ball play, skiing, and so on. * Do also some exercises to increase your muscular volume, since muscles will burn fat, for example weight lifting. 8. Find some new hobby or interest If you find yourself some new hobby or leisure activity, you will avoid boredom and the temptation to over-eat because you are bored. Try also to do interesting activities together with other people. The new activities will also give you less time to only sit eating. 9. Eat healthy food to increase your fat burning capacity It is not possible to loose weight without sticking to the above mentioned basic fat reduction principles, but you will also benefit from applying some measures that will increase your ability to passively burn fat: * Eat as natural food as possible, avoid food that has been heavily cooked, heavily fried or chemically processed. Natural food has its content of protein, vitamins minerals and anti-oxidants intact, and these are necessary for the fat burning abilities. * Eat some raw fruit and vegetables to each meal, since these contain vitamins, minerals and anti-oxidants you need. * You may benefit from supplements of vitamins, minerals, herbs, anti-oxidants, as these will make your body more capable of burning fat. * The little fat you use in your diet, should come from sources like olive, peanuts, canola, fish, nuts, sun-flower, etc. Then you will get a good balance between mono-unsaturated fat (olive, canola, and peanuts), poly-unsaturated fat of the omaga-3-type (fish) and poly-unsaturated fat of the omega-6-type (sunflower). * Consume whole cereals or bread made from whole unrefined cereals. * There are also natural products on the market you can use to increase your break down and burning of fat. 10. Bring your appetite under control Many of the measures already listed, will also help you to control your appetite. If this still is difficult, this problem may be attacked by specific means: * You can use some medicines to reduce appetite for some time or to reduce the uptake of fat or carbohydrates in your intestines. There are both natural medicines based on herbs, vitamins and minerals and pharmacological products to achieve this. * Daily meditation can help to relax your mind and gain control. * Psychological counseling may be necessary. 11. The ratio between fat and sugar in your diet The total mount of fat and carbohydrates combined, is a key factor in causing obesity, not fat alone or carbohydrates alone. In some weight loosing regimes, one eats very little carbohydrates, and fairly much fat. In others one eats fairly much carbohydrates, and very little fat. The proponents of each type of regime claim that their approach helps the body to burn fat better. Probably people are different, and react differently when trying to manipulate the diet in these ways. As a first approach, it is probably not wise to try such extreme approaches. However, if you have brought your eating habits under control, and still not achieved a satisfactory result, you can try to manipulate the fat/carbohydrate ratio to see if this will help. But do not stop consuming fat altogether. You will always need some essential fatty acids in your diet. CARRYING OUT YOUR PLAN Having made your plan for your weight reduction, the time has come to carry it out. After each week, go through the points in your plan, and evaluate how well you did. Also check your weight. Write down for every point in your plan how well you did.

By Luke Vorstermans “Networking is a waste of time,” said JoAnne, owner of a busy print shop. “Besides, I advertise in the daily paper.” “Wow, that must be expensive,” I exclaimed. “Are you getting results from that investment?” “I sure hope so! My advertising budget is about $475 a month but Ive never really tracked the results. I guess I should do that.” “You should.” I replied. “A small business cant afford to waste money on ineffective advertising. But back to your comment about networking: why do you think it’s a waste of time?” “I don’t know how to connect with people and make a lasting impression,” she replied. “Maybe I should give something so people will remember me.” “Not a bad idea. Its the best way to be remembered. Give potential clients something of value and it’s easier to make that follow up call.” “But how much value will make an impression?” she asked suspiciously. “Good question! But let me ask you this: How big of an impression do you want to make?” “Enough so I can follow up with a call and theyll remember who I am. Once Ive made the connection, the rest of the process is easy. Its making that first connection thats difficult.” “If you knew how many people came to your shop as a result of your advertisement, that would give you an idea of what youre now paying for a connection,” I suggested. “What do you mean?” she asked, her interest rising. “Well, advertising can be effective if you understand how it works. Most business owners dont, but spend their hard earned dollars advertising anyway. Its a well-worn business tradition. But lets say your $475 a month advertising brings you ten new connections a month. Youre basically paying $47.50 a connection or, we can call it a lead. How does that make you feel?” “$47.50 per lead? Thats outrageous! Especially since they may not even become a customer.” “Exactly. But if they do become a customer, $47.50 may not be out of line,” I replied. “But it gives you an idea of how much you are paying to get a lead. If you could be more accurate on placing that $47.50, you would have more control over the growth of your business.” “But how do I do that?” JoAnne asked glancing at her advertisement. “My point was to answer your question about how much value should you give to make a connection. First you have to decide how much a connection is worth. People will assess your sincerity on how much value you put into the connection. Its like a handshake. A firm engaging grip says one thing; a wimpy shake says another.” “So give me some examples of how to give something of value from a business that would have impact.” “Discounts for first time buyers are nice,” I said, “but everyone does the discount thing. Give something that stands out. A friend of mine gives a copy of his book, nicely packaged in a wooden case, to anyone he wants to do business with. Another business owner gives away CDs with a selection of Celtic music. Then theres the landscaper who brings rose bushes to every networking event he attends and gives them away for free. His cost? $12.95 per bush. He told me that his bush give-a-way was the most effective strategy in growing his business. If you were to do that with your $475 advertising budget, you could give away 36 rose bushes a month. Do you think that would be more rewarding than placing an advertisement? “You see, every business has to generate new leads. Telemarketing, cold calling, advertising are all shots in the dark an expensive way to find the specific customer youre looking for. But in a networking situation, you have control over the audience. First of all, youre only going to attend those events that serve your business needs. Second, youre there in personthe power of one-on-one communication. And third, by offering something of value, you are initiating the relationship. Its a powerful way to build a business.” “Wow! That puts networking into a whole new league,” JoAnne replied. “Yes, networking works if you put something of value into it … more than just a business card or a handshake. It’s a powerful tool once you know how to use it.” Luke Vorstermans owns and manages a successful publishing and communications company and is the Editor of Business Dynamics magazine and content contributor to IR Design.

By Patricia Twitchell In a world of instant gratification and so much that is made to be tossed out after one use, there are some things worth preserving. Childhood memories are among those things worth safeguarding. As a new grandmother, I fully appreciate the importance of teaching my son ways to capture memories of his first-born. Memories that will last for years to come. With some forethought memories that could easily slip away can be preserved for years. When it comes to our children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews, isnt it worth doing everything possible to capture their childhood experiences in a unique way? I still have a teddy bear given to me as a child. It is something that will forever remind me of my childhood. I have to wonder how much that childhood gift influenced my decision to open a teddy bear gift shop over ten years ago. A store that allows me the privilege to advise parents, grandparents, sister, brothers, uncles and aunts about gifts that can last that special child a lifetime. There is nothing more rewarding then knowing I am helping someone create fond memories through the choice of a special gift. Whether it is a unique picture frame, a special teddy bear or a distinctive gift such as a pewter case like ones from the A E Williams English Pewter selection, each gift is very carefully thought through. Something else I enjoy are conversations I share with my customers about what they do to create and preserve memories with their loved ones. Knowing how busy folks get, it is so refreshing to hear of how they take time to do something special. If you are someone who seems to always be busy, do yourself a favor and share quality time with those you love. Create fun experiences and rituals that are uniquely yours. You will forever be happy you did. Take plenty of pictures to capture those infant years that quickly turn into adolescent years that quickly turn into adulthood. Photo albums filled with precious experiences make wonderful gifts for first time parents as well as grandparents. Enjoy the wonder that is such a big part of a childs experiences. Put yourself back into the feeling of what it was like to discover something for the very first time. Think of how a child feels the first time they discover a butterfly gently landing on a flower. Or what about the first sight of a plane in the sky? Perhaps it is the discovery of what happens when water and dirt mix. Realize they have uncovered a hidden treasure with that one. Regardless of the discovery, it is in a moment a memory is made. When all is said and done, isnt life really about the memories we create with those we love? And arent the memories what lasts forever? — Publishing Guidelines: You may publish my article in your newsletter, on your web site, or in your print publication provided you include the resource box at the end.

By Tim F. Richardson From the past to the present time, there are many anglers quoting ‘biological nutritional values’ for carp baits and their ingredients. But are they ‘correct?’ or have we really been mislead for years?! This is not the simple subject that it appears to be: This is based on the supposed conversion of carp baits and how they are digested and assimilated in carp to become of biological value to carp; to be used in useful bodily processes, syntheses, growth, repair, release or storage of energy, etc. Some anglers are even offering computer programs to give you approximate ‘biological nutritional values’ of any particular bait mix you may be making from any of perhaps 30 ingredients in their list that they have analyzed. I find this incredible, firstly because all bait ingredients from different sources and supplier can differ differ, not only in their quality, but age before packing and consignment, stated ‘best before’ dates, methods of extraction, storage times, storage containers, storage temperatures, quality control methods, and methods of contents analysis. Not only does this render such a programme obsolete, for the above reasons; but for example the ’same labeled’ fish meal you use in the UK, may be extremely different to that obtained in the States, or Europe, but it’s beneficial effects at eating by carp will differ too! And this variable is multiplied as you combine various other different ingredients into your bait. But the BIGGEST MISTAKE being made is that, the old measure of the ‘biological nutritional value,’ or the more recent and accurate ‘fixed dietary protein percentage score’ are only scientific results of tests on HUMANS NOT CARP! Even analysis values for fish rearing feeds pellets and powders for trout, salmon and trout are those designed for the specific scientifically proven dietary requirements for those specific individual fish and as such may differ from carp requirements so much, that used in quantities over log periods of time, these could even be harmful, causing vitamin deficiencies, or liver damage for example! Now I don’t know about your scientific expertise, but unless you happen to be a PhD marine biologist whose history is testing carp bait biological nutritional values in carp of differing stages of maturity, you definitely will not know the best answer to the following example of such a problem: In the UK it has become very fashionable for most of the popular fishing paper to recommend using the now extremely popular ‘halibut rearing pellets.’ These contain an exceptionally high oils content and are formulated for maximising biological ‘mass’ gains in halibut rearing. These may be good for young halibut, but are they ‘ideal’ for mature carp to ingest in kilograms on a daily basis because they are thrown into carp waters by the majority of carp anglers who do tend to copy each other, and follow whatever the bait ‘fashion’ happens to be? In carp bait design, there is a big problem that only a tiny percentage of bait makers ever hear about, and presents a real challenge! There is the small but very significant matter of ‘first limiting amino acids.’ These will affect things biological terms, in carp baits, by limiting the proteins that carp can actually assimilate and use before wasting them. Adding to your problem, is that fish in different waters, and even within the same waters, can have different most deficient individual amino acids in their own personal diets and bodies at any time; and this obviously affects their dietary requirements and very likely;bait preferences too! In bait making, you effectively need to know which amino acids each ingredient is most deficient in, and its very handy to know which amino acids each ingredient is highest in too! Maybe then, you can design a bait with a nutritional food content; with the correct ratios of fats, carbohydrates and proteins etc, including a ‘balanced amino acid profile,’ where all ’standard’ carp amino acids requirements are met in sufficient quantities to meet dietary requirements. Have you ever tried to make a bait that is proven to do this; where each of your ingredients cancel-out the ‘limiting amino acid effects’ of all the other ingredients? This is part of the reason that the very high protein carp baits of the past do not produce MORE carp than baits with a ‘balanced food profile’ like the ones being used today. I.e. owing to the effect of ‘limiting amino acids’ in these high protein ingredients baits, very little of the protein in the bait was being utilized by the carp, and so was wasted and excreted! Even top body-builders do not eat a diet that is 90% protein; they recognise that the correct nutritional balance, energy and foods ratios are essential for optimum gains achieved! So, back to making carp baits; there is a new American measurement, for the biological nutritional value of food. Its name is: ‘The Protein Digestibility Corrected Amino Acid Score. The name of the old method most often used for making carp baits is the biological nutritional value or the BNV. The new, more refined method is the protein digestibility corrected amino acid score or the PDCAAS. For example, wheat germ protein has a PDCAAS value of about 0.4 to 0.5, and is limited by lysine. It has more than a carps requirement for methionine. Haricot bean protein has a PDCAAS of around 0.6 to 0.7 and is limited by methionine. It has more than the carps requirement for lysine. Consumed together in equal amounts they provide a PDCAAS value of 1. Number 1 denotes the highest protein value in human dietary terms. Each protein food is balanced by the other. Carp can receive the full dietary requirement of both of each first limiting amino acid in each food bait ingredient, such as white fish meal, or fish protein concentrate. There are many nutritional ingredients that produce this effect when combined together in bait. Fishing bait suppliers offer the most commonly known ones, although are not necessarily the most effective on many waters today. Below is an ingredients list of aquaculture carp feed stuffs, ideal for carp bait and boilie making. Used in combination, these can also maximize carp health and growth by combining the negative digestive effects of their individual first limiting amino acids. (Indicated): Whole egg: the first limiting amino acid is threonine. (Egg is an excellent whole food ingredient and bait binder.) Whey: first limiting amino acids are methionine / cystine. Whole milk: methionine / cystine. Fish muscle: methionine / phenylalanine. Fish meal (Herring): threonine. White fish meal: threonine / phenylalanine. Fish silage: tryptophan. Fish protein concentrate: cystine. Whole shrimp meal: histidine. Soya bean meal: methionine. Blood meal: isoleucine. Meat and bone meal: methionine. Liver meal: lysine. Beef meal: methionine / cystine. Poultry (chicken and turkey) by-product meals: tyrosine. Hydrolyzed feather meal: methionine. Spirulina maxima: cystine. Groundnut meal: methionine. Whole wheat meal: lysine. Maize meal: lysine / tryptophan. Potato protein concentrate: methionine. Worm meal: cystine. Leaf protein concentrate: cystine. Coconut: lysine. Sesame: lysine. Linseed / flaxseed: lysine. Sunflower: lysine. Cottonseed: lysine. Palm Kernel: lysine / methionine. Safflower: lysine. Crambe: lysine. Rapeseed: cystine. Chick pea: methionine. Cow pea: methionine. Mung bean: cystine. Haricot bean: methionine. Yellow (sweet) lupin: methionine. Most pulses: methionine. Saccharomyces cerevisiae: (bakers and brewers yeast): methionine. Torulopsis utilis: (yeast): methionine. M. methylotrophus: (bacterium): cystine. Most animal, pet and commercial bait companies will supply an analysis of each product. These list for example, protein content, added amino acids, minerals, trace elements and vitamin, salt supplement content, type of oils or fat content, dietary fiber, any ash (for potassium) content. Researching the PDCAAS value of your carp bait ingredients, is an excellent way to ensure you are balancing the wasteful limiting nutritional effects, of the first limiting essential amino acids in your bait. This ensures carps maximum utilization of your bait proteins for maximum bait attraction and available nutrition. In a way, you balanced profile baits can become habit forming to carp you introduce more and they eat more of it over time. They will sense your baits superior energy efficient nutritional benefits and attraction. As a consequence, with good angling skills, your catches will grow, and the numbers of bigger fish you hook will improve. The oily fish group, is ideal as a bait bulk protein provider. For example: meals made from anchovies, herring, mackerel, mullet, sardines, salmon, trout, tuna, and others like smelts and capellin. Most types of shellfish are ideal sources of protein for carp too, and have repeatedly produced excellent catches. Plant sources like beans, pulses, grains, nuts, seeds, for example; soybean products, buckwheat, and millet, are also good sources of proteins. These also need combining with other protein sources for the best amino profile and balance, as they are often deficient in some important amino acids. It is recommended to combine plant and animal proteins to best exploit the effects and benefits of each other. Earlier biological measurement tests had in built faults and unknown variables. These popularly used evaluations were called the Protein efficiency ratio or PER and the biological nutritional value or BNV. Of cause, the validity of any nutritional biological value, and its accuracy, only holds true to carp, if tested using carp nutritional values! In the past, many anglers have attempted to apply the old BNV evaluation measurement to carp bait ingredients. These have been used produce a total figure for a high nutritional value bait, but were not accurate at all. These were human nutrition values for foods and food group constituents, and not carp tested evaluations! However, they can give us comparative guide to values for carp. The highest PDCAAS value is 1, (for humans,) with 0 as the lowest score. Examples of some PDCAAS values for carp bait ingredients are: Soya: 1. Egg white: 1. Casein: 1. Whey: 1. Milk: 1. Beef: 0.98. Kidney beans: 0.68. Lentils: 0.52. Peanuts: 0.52. Wheat: 0.25. Although the PDCAAS is more accurate than the PER or BV, the following are important facts relating to bait design, which can be misleading to any evaluation: A.	The scores were results from nutritional humans testing only. B.	The BV measures nitrogen absorption, but ignores important variables affecting digestion. C.	The PDCAAS adjusts for proteins digested but lost from the body unused, or to bacterial digestion in the gut. Proteins are assumed to have been available when a food was digested, but were actually unavailable because of digestive inhibitors like soy tannins. D.	It is misleading because a diet very rarely consists of just one food source E.	Probably the most important flaw is related to amino acids, and this also is a big point to remember in designing your bait! Calculating the biological digestibility value of food constituents of human diet, purely based on the more accurate PDCAAS measure, is presently impossible to complete accurately. The same applies to carp bait too!) A single ingredient in the diet could supply very many of a large profile of amino acids, which another ingredient is lacking in. The PDCAAS evaluation result would show a higher value than any of the individual ingredients. This is totally inaccurate as all the individual amino acids would have to be analyzed, individually assessed and calculated! All we can do is use human nutritional values in the design of carp baits, until science catches up with our needs. If any carp fisherman knows of a flawless evaluation method that provides true carp bait nutritional values, please let everyone know! Obviously, using fish meal does have the added advantage of containing all the essential amino acids fish require, but there is also the ‘biological digestibility factor; is it better to go for whey protein isolates, or predigested caseins, or predigested shellfish extracts? It seems that cost of ingredients is a factor most fishermen regard more highly than if their baits will provide amazing results more consistently than the ‘average’ angler’s baits!

By Donahue Elway Is having healthy hair a difficult thing? Many people try all sorts of products to make their hair look better, smell better and be stronger. But, this can really rack up the dollars if you are not careful. Instead of spending countless dollars on products that promise to deliver beautiful hair, simply take a step back and learn a few basic things that everyone should do. From here, you can learn how to correct the problems you have and how to keep the beautiful, healthy hair once you get it. If you purchase products that are the most expensive believing that they work better than the other, less expensive formulas, you may be wasting your money. First off, take a bottle of the expensive stuff, flip it over and compare the ingredients to that of the less expensive product. What is the difference, the smell of the product? Lets go back to the beginning. If you properly care for your hair, your hair will be healthy and strong. Properly washing your hair is essential. This means using a good quality shampoo and conditioner if needed about three or four times a week. Properly maintaining it is also the key. For this, we mean not over doing the products you put into your hair or having treatment after treatment done to it. If you are continuously perming, straightening, highlighting or bleaching your hair, you are going to damage it. Once hair is damaged, there is little that can be done to repair it. If you go to a good quality salon, you will receive good advice on how to treat your damaged hair. There are relaxers and chemicals that can be used to repair some of the damage. You may need a good hair cut to lose most of it though. It is dangerous to continuously damage your hair though. Trying different products on your own can do more damage than good. It is wise to take your damaged hair to a professional for advice before trying to repair it on your own. The last point to make about having healthy hair is that it is up to you to maintain it once you have it. Abrasive chemicals and dyes can hurt your hairs internal structure. Sure, there are hundreds of different looks you want, but the more changes you make the more damage you can do. It is simply wise to take your hair needs to a professional instead of making changes yourself. You will be happy you did when you avoid all the hair damage you will avoid! Donahue Elway

By Di Roberts First it was in the fast food industry. You couldn’t buy anything without your friendly server offering to get you a bigger version of it. The good thing was that you also had to pay more for it. Now it seems to be everywhere. Woe betide the eatery, plain or fancy, that hasn’t adjusted the amount of food they deliver as a “portion” upward. Coming in the September issue of the Journal of the American Dietetic Association, will be an article about a study from Rutgers that compares what 177 young adults perceived as normal portions of breakfast, lunch, and dinner items with what a similar group allotted for similar items 20 years ago. The young people were invited to have a free meal at which they were to choose typical portions of eight food and beverage items at breakfast or six items at lunch or dinner. It turned out that the perceptions of typical portion size were drastically increased for items that were served from and consumed from a cup or a bowl. As an example, study authors Jaime Schwartz, M.S., R.D. and Carol Byrd-Bredbenner, Ph.D., R.D., specifically mentioned that the subjects’ ideas of typical portions of orange juice were 40 plus percent larger than 20 years ago. They also mentioned that this amount of juice would provide 50 additional calories and, if one drank that amount every day, it would add up to enough calories to add on five pounds over the course of a year. In all, more than half of the portions selected for breakfast were at least 25 percent higher than chosen by the young people of twenty years ago. For lunch and dinner items, about 70 percent of the portion sizes chosen by today’s young adults were at least 25 percent higher than those of twenty years ago. The investigators also compared the portion sizes considered typical by their group of subjects with the serving size listed on Nutrition Facts panels for those foods and found those labels also were underestimates of what was actually considered a normal serving size by their subjects. So there seems to be an agreement here, between increasing portion sizes and increasing girth for the population. The whole situation is undoubtedly more complicated than can be explained by this one factor, but it could well be a major contributor to the weight control difficulties of many people. If there was any good news in this study, it was that the amount of salad dressing used by the young adults in the current study was actually less than from two decades ago. And, yes, they did eat salad. Perhaps the message from the dieticians that one should not ruin the positive nutritional effects of raw vegetables by coating them in oil and sugar is being heard. That opens up the possibility that further educational efforts might also be effective. Given that many people, perhaps including people near and dear to us, or even our own selves, now think that what constitutes a normal portion is larger than it used to be, how can those of us who would like to control our weights of even lose weight, cope? Here are just a couple of ideas. The first thing in weight control is to learn to sense our body’s signals when it is no longer hungry and respond to them immediately. That requires eating slowly, with full attention on the food at hand, so that you can give our body time to send us satiety signals and pay attention to the signals it is sending. If you really, really pay attention to what you are eating, you will really, really enjoy it more. You also learn what really tastes good to you and won’t want to waste calories or time or taste sensations on junk that just doesn’t measure up. This is also the best strategy for dinner parties or holiday feasts or any occasion where you’re eating food someone else has prepared and they might be insulted if you don’t seem to be eating with pleasure. If you are preparing your own meals, then you can measure everything and put it onto smaller plates or into smaller bowls than usual so it fills the space. Full plate, full stomach, regardless of the size of the plate, right? It actually does help. Also, by measuring things, you get a good idea of what your appropriate serving size looks like so you can judge when you hit the buffet line. Be sure to use a small plate there. Frequent small meals eliminate the psychological need to stoke up. If you have eaten only three hours ago and will eat again in three hours, then you only need true normal portions to keep hunger at bay. This pattern also keeps the metabolism up, making weight loss easier. If you’re eating out, try ordering a full meal, then take half of it home for lunch the next day. The amounts they give you at restaurants these days are so huge, you can easily get two meals out of one and save some dollars, too.

By Simon Oldmann How do you go about finding the best financial planner for your money? Well, like many people, you are probably very skittish when it comes to trusting just anyone with your money and for good reason. However, the skittishness could work to your advantage, when it comes to finding the best financial planner. In these times, any person walking down the street can proclaim themselves a financial planner, the key is to knowing the good from the bad. Many people have found the market for financial planners is strong because the demand grows with each passing day for financial product advice as people are readying themselves for retirement and other issues become more complex. Attorneys, accountants, insurance agents, and brokers are all becoming financial planners in addition to their current titles; this may not mean they have your best interests at heart either. This may come at a surprise to you; however, as unfortunate as it is, it is a reality. It is extremely important that you conduct full research to avoid running into an instance where your money has suddenly disappeared without an explanation. It is also important that you keep in mind, just because a person claims to be a financial planner, does not mean that they have guidelines, or processes that they follow. Therefore, the first thing you must do is find potential financial planners. This can be done easily by searching online, using your favorite search engine, and locating financial planners organizations or you could also talk to you friends, family members, or colleagues and find out whom they recommend. It is important that you trust the judgment of any person you are seeking advice from, when it comes to finding the best financial planner. After you have gathered a list of prospective financial planners, it is time to start contacting them. Telephone contact should be the first step, through this contact you can ask a variety of questions and eliminate those that do not meet your needs. Some things you should paying attention to during these telephone calls include if they sound to rushed, you will want to dismiss them as potentials. Furthermore, if their asset minimums are simply too much for you, you should dismiss them as well. Personal and in person meetings are required before you decide on the best financial planner. You will not simply want to make a decision based on telephone conversations and contact. Meeting with the financial planner yourself is the only way to fully determine if you feel good about that specific person. It is suggested that you have at least three meetings before making a decision. During the meetings, in order to help you determine who the best financial planner is ask the following questions. How many years have you been a financial planner? Do you have any specialty areas? Educational Funding? Estate Planning? You should also be asking what their typical client has in financial and assets needs. This question will help you determine if they are the best financial planner for you. Prospective students that desire a ground-breaking academic curriculum may opt to enroll in an assortment of natural health schools and alternative healing colleges. In present times, alternative healing colleges offer an array of diploma, certificate and even degree programs in natural healing. Whether you’re intrigued by the idea of enrolling in a massage therapy course or would like to learn more about herbal medicine, an alternative healing college will usually afford students with practical and academic training in these specific disciplines. In addition, alternative healing colleges may provide classes and certificate programs in reflexology, aromatherapy, iridology, herbal studies, animal massage, and many other associated fields of study. Furthermore, alternative healing colleges can be a productive education resource to attain your degrees in natural health, naturopathy, holistic nutrition, acupuncture, Oriental medicine, and other related subject matter. As an added incentive, many alternative healing colleges may extend distance learning and online courses to students and other practitioners who wish to attain supplementary holistic and healing arts education. Generally, alternative healing colleges, in addition to chiropractic schools, provide an extensive curriculum, which teaches students about natural and noninvasive therapies that may be effective in treating illness and other health disorders. Successful graduates of an alternative healing college can apply their learned skills in a variety of natural healthcare facilities, including complementary medicine clinics, chiropractic and acupuncture private practices, and other integrative health and wellness centers.
